I just upgraded my gus max rev.1.8 to 1meg ram. The doom music seems to
sound exactly the same. Do I need to use and command line parameters?
Like "doom -gus1"? Anyways, I heard the music was supposed to be much
better than the sb16 at least and would like to hear for myself. Only I
don't seem to have something set up correctly.
Also when I load certain demos, like Second Reality and a few others,
they run slower with gus music enabled. But when I delete the set
blaster line from the autoexec.bat they run the same speed with gus
enabled as they did with it disabled (fast, as it should be with a gus).
Something strange is going on here....

Hhmm.... this is not a stupid question. You're right. ORST has been
having problems mirroring files but looks like freedom is missing some
files too. I'll get them to check on it. Meanwhile, wuarchive is ok.
It's hard to get on but at odd hours in the evening, you can get on. And
it does have everything. Otherwise, you'll have to access some of the
other non North American sites then. Thanks for notifying us of the
problem.

I just wrote something to fix the problem with Dark Forces disabling
your line in (incase you have a sound blaster)... I'm uploading it
to EPAS now, it will be under DARKFIX.ZIP.
It's much faster w/ digital effects on the SB.

The not-official drivers from Robert Manley give you music via GUS and
sound effects via PC-speaker.

I'm running this beta with the official drivers and it works fine with full
sound and music:)

My recommendation is that if you want to run DOS games under OS/2 you
should try the not-official drivers (until Gravis comes with a newer driver?).

Ok, forgive me if this is a really stupid question, but is there something
wrong with the ftp sites for GUS stuff? I've been looking for patches, and
when I look on all of the sites listed in the US, the index file is in the
sound/patches/files directory, but there's no other files? My appologies if
this was discussed recently...I just joined the list earlier today.

gravis driver just crap... use manley's instead. actually, do you want to
wait for a vapourware that's supposed to be released by Gravis or dig out
25 bucks for a 3rd party driver? well, consider manley's support midi
playback under win-os2, i find that $25 is well-spent...

you should state that that Doom/2 is an, should i say, alpha back in Oct, 94,
which is very unstable at the time.

Don't ever run either Mega 'Em or SBOS under OS/2! They try to talk directly
to the hardware which OS/2 has a problem with (and well it should!). However,
you're in luck...Robert Manley's fine (shareware) OS/2 driver for the GUS
(when registered) includes DOS emulation of the Roland MPU-401 interface. So
you can set up a DOS session and have your game play GM music through an MPU-401
and, voila, it works...
I was particularly amazed that it would work with my Adaptec 1542C which uses
the same hex addr as the 401. But since it's all virtualised, I could get
WINOS2 sessions playing MIDI through the GUS no problemo...
As for the mouse, one of the DOS session is MOUSE_EXCLUSIVE_ACCESS which you
may want to set if you get double mice or no mice in a DOS session...
And, of course, make sure OS/2 is loading both the mouse driver and the Virtual
Mouse driver (vcom.sys and vmouse.sys, I think). There is a replacement mouse
driver called rodent.sys on hobbes somewhere, as well.

Hello gussers, Anyone have the game STUNTS, its a race car game, I think
it is a takeoff from test drive 3 or somwthing anyway.... MegaEm sounds
cool on this game (gusmax 1mb) but when you are driving the engine sounds
and tire squeeling sounds are pianos and drums :) I know this is because
if you had a sb the chezzy fm sounds can be manipulated to sound like a
car engine while the gus uses digital insturments.... I have found the
pacthes the game uses for the engine noises and made a custom patch for a
replacemnt but this is a lot of work! First off I had to figure out at
what notes the game would trigger to sound the engine iddleing, the find
the note for when it is running and how many ocatves it waz using.....
this sucks...(btw if you have a real MT-32 or sound canvanse what happens
the same thing?) why hasne gravis relased some sort of program to help
people in finding and helping to do this?

The AIL 3.10? drivers (usail310.zip), as used by System Shock CD, do
exactly this.

From: (null)
Technical notes on the driver^M
-----------------------------^M
The MIDI driver implements patch cacheing. It attempts to optimize the
amount^M
of patch cacheing done in a game by keeping track of what instruments are^M
used throughout the game. When the driver shuts down, it writes out a small^M
file called <memory size in K>.GUS. This lists all the instruments ever used^M
while playing the game. When the driver initializes the next time, it^M
reads this file, and pre-loads all the needed patches. This prevents the^M
"pausing" that can happen while cacheing patches during the gameplay.^M
^M
The driver also has one other feature to minimize the amount of patch^M
cacheing during gameplay. If there was not enough room to load any more^M
patches needed, the driver will switch to a lower patch loading resolution.^M
It will only step down one resolution per init-deinit cycle of the driver,
so^M
it may take a few sessions of the game before optimal performance is
achieved.^
M
The first step down loads the patches as 8-bit. Then they will be loaded at^M
half the sampling frequency if there is still not enough room for all of
them.^
M
This flag is also stored in the <memory size in K>.GUS file.^M
^M
Any patch that cannot be loaded will not be heard (no re-mapping is done).^M
You may experience a lot of notes missing the first time you play a game^M
on a low memory card (such as 256K). After you quit and play a few more
times^M
the notes should all play (unless the particular midi file uses a great deal^M
of patches). The driver also loads the patches from low to high patch
numbers,^
M
and flushes the patches from high to low patch numbers. In real terms this^M
means that Melodic patches will get loading precedence over percussion^M
patches.^M
^M
The driver gets the list of patches from the ULTRADIR\ultrasnd.ini file, and^M
looks for the patches in the ULTRADIR\midi directory.^M

Hello all, I installed rott ( Rise of the Tirad, SHAREWARE ) on my system
lat night. IT runs nice, real fast (486/66/VLB) and the music is about
10 to 15 times better than the doom crap. However I can't get the sound
effects to play through my gus max 1meg. It has a selection for gus
sound effects in the sound setup but it doesn't work. Anyone have any
ideas or experience with this game and the gus? I'm sure as hell not
going to buy it if it won't work properly with the gus ( as is my policy
concering ALL games ).
In short: SFX won't work with gus max/1meg in ROTT 12a. HELP!
